Agape News: Wednesday night + funny Christmas video…

Tomorrow night at Agape, we will finish up our 8 week study on the Gospel in Life. The subject tomorrow night is Heaven: the eternal, ultimate city - the destination of all of those who die in Jesus. What does the Bible really teach about Heaven? Will there be pearly gates, and streets of gold, and St. Peter standing as the door guard? What difference does Heaven make in our lives today? Is it simply the destination of Believers when we die, or does the very existence of Heaven actually impact us in December of 2010? Finally, at the end of time, do we go to Heaven, or does it come to us? Come join us as we look at this fascinating topic, and sing lots of Southern Gospel songs!! (just kidding about that last part…maybe) ;) We start at 7pm, or come a little early for some good coffee and fellowship.

Also, though I will write a bit more about it this week, don’t forget that we are celebrating the birth of Jesus this Sunday by coming together and eating, worshiping, and feeding on the Word of God. Everything kicks off this Sunday with a covered dish breakfast, which means you need to bring food! We will also be doing food pantry, so bring a little extra for our food pantry friends.

Finally - here is a funny little video: The 12 Doctrines of Christmas: YouTube Preview Image

Warning, this video contains the word Calvinism! ;) For those who wonder, and you might after watching the video, I am a 3.5 (or 3.75) point Calvinist, a Credo Baptist (not Paedo), believe the whole issue of Supralapsarianism is quite silly because it tries to get into the mind of God a bit much, and am monergestic. For those who wonder what those words mean, they are just fancy words, used by theologians to make people think they are smart! :)

See you tomorrow!

Agape News, Pinson Christmas Gathering and Upcoming Events

Hello all,

I am looking forward to this Sunday, to worshiping together with you, and being edified and challenged by David McConnell, who will be bringing a message that will enable us to focus more on Jesus and the reason for His coming to earth from heaven. We begin at 10:00am with breakfast, and then will launch into worship and word. Afterwards, we will have a brief family meeting for all who would like budget updates for 2010.

Note that next Sunday, we will be celebrating Christmas together @Agape. John Talley and the worship team have planned a very special morning for us that includes multiple stories (and story-tellers) that will point us to Jesus. We will have special music that day, the Kids ReVive children’s group will help lead us, and several people will be speaking and contributing. It will not be a typical, traditional celebration of Christmas, but more of a Jesus focused time of appreciation of and joy in the most needed and wonderful gift in history. The whole day will kick off with a delicious covered dish breakfast, so remember to bring some great breakfast items to share, and keep in mind that some of our food pantry friends will be joining us, so try and bring extra food, if you can!

Finally, I have been contacted by a few families that need help this Christmas. If you would like to join in helping them, please email me back, and let me know.

See you Sunday!

Agape: This Sunday and Upcoming Events.

Hello all!

I hope that you are all healthy and recovering from illness! (We had nearly 30 folks out with sickness this past Sunday, including 4 in my family)

This Sunday, we are launching into a new and exciting four part series called, “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus”. The focus will be on the importance of the arrival of Jesus the savior and messiah - Immanuel - God becoming flesh and living and walking among all of humanity. This will be an extended look at the coming of Jesus, and will go way beyond merely talking about the “true meaning of Christmas”. In addition, we will be celebrating the baptism of Jessica Street, as well as the dedication of several of her children, worshiping the living God, and enjoying breakfast and fellowship with each other. Come join us - we start at 10:00am!

There are lots of special events going on in December, and I have listed them below under upcoming events. I will call your attention to a couple of them: Note that we are having a Genesis Christmas gathering this Sunday night at 6pm, and this will likely be our last official Genesis meeting of the year. We will be singing Jesus focused Christmas songs, fellowshipping, eating together, and discussing God’s call for Agape in 2011. Bring food to share if you can, and meet at our house at 6pm. All are invited to Genesis! Also note that we are having a brief family meeting after church next Sunday, December 12 to pass out our 2010 budget, and how many has been spent and to answer any financial question you might have. Finally, notice that on Sunday, December 19, we will be celebrating Christmas - Agape style! (note: that is the corniest sentence I have typed in all of 2010) What does that mean? We will begin at 10:00am with a covered dish breakfast (that means bring some yummy breakfast food from home - enough to share!), launch into a special time of worship and celebration of the coming of Jesus, listen to a special message, and then fellowship together. We will be doing food pantry that day, and inviting our food pantry friends to worship with us. I would like to ask you to invite your friends to come join us also!

Upcoming Events:

  • Sunday December 5, 10 am: Come Thou Long Expected Jesus Series, part 1 (4 parts) Jessica Street baptism.
  • Sunday, December 5 6pm: Genesis Christmas gathering!
  • Wednesday, December 8: Gospel in Community Part 7 Wednesday Night Bible Study, 7pm.

Community Thanksgiving Service + Orphan Rockathon and Thanksgiving Service report…

Hi everybody,

I am writing to remind you of the Community Thanksgiving Service tomorrow night at Living Word Church (see Janet’s letter below for directions), beginning at 6:30pm. Six different fellowships are invited, and covered dish style food will be served afterwards. The service itself will last for an hour. Please see the letter below for more details!

Also - Nick and Lisa had their fourth child, Rebekah this past Friday, and they are now home from the hospital. How about we get them some food this week to help out?! They are a relatively new couple at Agape, and I think it would be a tremendous blessing to them for us to bring some food. Please email me if you can help out this week! So far, it looks like Wednesday is covered.

Don’t forget: No Wednesday night services @Agape!

The Friday night Rockathon at Agape was a huge success. I believe well over one hundred people came, from multiple churches. We rocked for the orphans, fellowshipped, ate, and had a wonderful time. Somewhere near seven thousand dollars ($7000.00!) was raised - more than double last year - PRAISE GOD! Thank you to all who participated!!

Our Sunday morning worship/Thanksgiving celebration was also wonderful. The worship team stirringly led us before God with praise and adoration, the crowd was huge (140-160 or so), the food pantry went off without a hitch, the Gospel was shared, and at least one person came to Jesus for the first time, and will be baptized next week!!! How good is God?!!!

Here are details on the Community Thanksgiving service, written by my dear wife Janet. I know this week is busy, but I hope you can make time for this gathering - I believe unity in the Body of Christ is quite a blessing to God!

Wednesday Night @Agape Plus: All of November’s Upcoming Events.

Hello everybody,

I realize that we have a lot of things going on in November, so I thought I’d send out a list of those upcoming events. Don’t forget, too, that we have Bible study and fellowship time at Agape tonight at 7pm. In tonight’s Bible study, we are going to be looking at some interesting topics that aren’t talked about much in church these days: work, sabbath, rest, and how the Gospel of Jesus interacts with those things. Should Christians still have a sabbath? Why did the Jews have so many sabbath rules? How do we literally store up treasures in heaven? These are the things we will be looking at tonight at 7, though come a little early for the coffee and fellowship. Also - don’t forget that Kids ReVive and EPIC youth meet on Wednesday nights also, with both beginning around 6:30.

Here’s what’s going on this month:

Friday, November 19th 6:00pm - New Day Rockathon. We will raise money for orphans by rocking on rocking chairs (don’t forget to get your sponsors together now!). There will be a bake sale, music, and lots of fun and games. Don’t forget to bring a bowl of chili or soup to share. Please see Laine Ferrill’s email below for more information on the Rockathon.

Sunday, November 21st 10:00am. Thanksgiving celebration and Homecoming! We have a very special Sunday morning gathering planned this week. We will begin at 10:00am this Sunday, but instead of having breakfast together, as is our norm, we will enjoy a short time of coffee and fellowship before going straight into worship a few minutes after ten. The worship songs will be very special this week, I am told. In addition, we will be dedicating close to one million babies (actually, six or seven) and having some baptisms as well. The message will be special and different, and when all is said and done, we will end with a lunch time celebration of Thanksgiving together. This lunch will be COVERED DISH - so you all have to cook things and bring them! Please bring a dessert AND a main course/side dish. Don’t forget to bring extra food to share, because it is likely that we will have a larger than normal crowd. Don’t forget that our food ministry to the community is this Sunday also, and we will be inviting them to celebrate Thanksgiving with us. NOTE: There will be no Genesis meeting Sunday night.

Tuesday, November 23rd Community Thanksgiving Service at Living Word Church in Pinson (five minutes away from Agape, just north of Pinson High School on highway 75). This multi-church meeting will come together at 6:30, and will conclude with yet another covered dish dinner, so don’t forget to bring some food for that also. The bonus is, of course, that you get to enjoy everybody else’s cooking too!

Wednesday, November 24th: No Adult Bible Study, or Kids ReVive. The youth are to meet at David’s house - but check with him first to confirm.
See you Wednesday!

P.S.:
More on the Rockathon:

Hey Friends and Family!

SAVE THE DATE! Friday November 19, 2010
Agape Baptist Church Pinson, Alabama
6:00 p.m.
Bring a crock-pot of soup or chili, a board game or dominos, and get ready to rock on! ;)

It’s that time again! We are having a “Rockathon” to support New Day Foster Home in China! Some of you may remember it last year, some of you even ROCKED last year, many of you gave so generously, and then some of you may be “new” to rockin’!

Regardless, please allow me to tell you briefly about why we’re rocking:
Our sweet newest son, Kevin, was cared for by New Day until we traveled last February to adopt him. New Day is a Christian run orphanage caring for special needs orphans. Last November while waiting to travel, we had a Rockathon to raise money to buy rocking chairs so the nannies could rock and comfort the babies at the orphanage. We raised over THREE THOUSAND dollars! Not only were rocking chairs purchased, but we also were able to outfit the entire new orphanage in southern China with those funds! Praise God!
This year we desire to rock again, and put the funds toward the day to day expense of running New Day South–formula, diapers, hiring nannies, etc. New Day South currently has one sweet little guy–Kenneth– and they anticipate the arrival or FOUR new babies as soon as they can hire nannies! How exciting!

We have committed this Rockathon to the Lord, we have prayed and prayed over it, and we want HIM to receive all the glory! By participating, you will be answering God’s call in His Word to “take care of widows and orphans in their distress” (James 1:27), and “defending the cause of the widow and orphan, giving them food and clothing” (Deuteronomy 10:18).

Will you please pray about how God wants you to be involved? There are several ways:
1. PRAY that God will bring in the funds HE wants for New Day South!
2. BE A ROCKER! All you have to do is rock for 15 minutes and ask friends and family to sponsor you (maybe a dollar per minute?). If you want to be a Rocker, email me and I will give you the sign up information!
3. SPONSOR A ROCKER! (I’ve got eight little rockers that need a sponsor! :)
4. DONATE A BAKED ITEM for the bake sale that will take place during the Rockathon
5. JUST COME AND ENJOY GOOD FELLOWSHIP!

Agape News: Reformation Day this Sunday + Join us for Breakfast + Sam and the children preaching on Philippians!

Hello all,

This is shaping up to be a fun weekend at Agape, and I hope you can join us at 10am this Sunday! Here’s what’s going on:

10:Am - We begin our time together with a fresh, made from scratch breakfast. Come join us for the food, or even better - the fellowship!

Sam and the Kids are bringing the message this Sunday. The kids will be sharing with us out of Philippians 4, and will be singing with us, and Sam is preaching on Philippians 4.

The Ferrill family will be joining us to talk about the New Day South Orphanage Rockathon which will be held at Agape on Friday, November 19th, and will involve us helping to raise money and take care of orphans in China.

This Sunday is not only halloween, but moreso Reformation Day - a day worth celebrating, and I plan on celebrating it in a rather unique way Sunday. More on that later…

Keep praying for: Steve Sellers (elbow injury and cracked vertebrae), for Garrett Owen, and the Roberts family.

See you Sunday!

Agape Newsletter: Special “TOGETHER” Edition! (also: Genesis this Sunday night and Breakfast this Sunday morning at 10am)

Hello all,

Very quickly, here’s is what is going on at Agape this week: 1. Worship and Gathering Together begins Sunday at 10:00am with fellowship and breakfast, and then worship and a call to unity and pressing on from Philippians 3:20-4:3. 2. Sunday Night We have Genesis - a great time of fellowship and Bible discussion at our house at 6pm. All are invited!

And now, with the details out of the way, please allow me to urge you to read and ponder this short exhortation:

Dear friends,

I hope this letter finds you well! You might have noticed that I have used the word “together” a good bit lately in messages and in these newsletters, and there is a reason for that. The Hebrew word “synagogue”, which we normally take to refer to an Old Testament place of meeting, actually means “to gather, or assemble together”. Similarly, the Greek Word Ecclesia, which we usually translate as “church”, and also apply to a building, in fact means “an assembly of people” or “gathering together.” As I have been saying on Sunday mornings, we Christians have somehow found ourselves in a place where we consider “doing church” to mean that we come together for a two or three hour religious service with music and preaching. While worshipful, God-focused music and God glorifying preaching is indeed critical to the coming together of God’s people, a closer examination of the New Testament indicates that the church/Ecclesia is not just a religious gathering that happens once a week (and occasionally on Wednesdays), but is in fact a calling into God’s abundant life, shared together in trials and triumphs. It goes far beyond just coming to a religious service, and it should stretch far beyond Sunday morning!

Hebrews 10:25 is a passage that preachers often use to get people to “come to church”. It reads, “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” The word there, translated as “meeting together” is essentially the word synagogue, and it is indeed a call to put first priority on the people of God gathering themselves together for the purposes of God, but it goes far beyond just a mandate to attend church! Again, the Body of Christ, is called together to much more than a “church service”. Look here at Ephesians 2: 21In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.22And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.” Did you see the double use of the word “together”? How about here, in Ephesians 3: “6This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.”? Once again, the word together is used multiple times. Meditate here on the five occurrences of the word “together”, and you will see quite clearly that we are called to come together for more than just a meeting or two each week. We are being made, by Jesus, into a people, sharing life and the gospel together, with a mission to serve the world and bring them the Good News of Jesus. And we are called to do it all TOGETHER!

The above is one reason why all of our primary worship services on Sunday start with breakfast together. Not so we can eat - we do plenty of that - but so that we can go deeper into relationship with each other, in the hopes that it breaks out from the bounds of Sunday into Monday, Thursday, etc. That is also why we are moving away from Sunday school/small groups on Sunday mornings and towards home groups. Sunday school has had an incredible discipleship impact on the church in the last couple of centuries (the first Sunday school happened in the 1750s), and I do not disparage it in the least - it has been important for me, and for my children. Sunday school, however, is quite limited in its time constraints, and thus it limits our ability to know each other on a deeper level. Home groups do not share that limitation, which is why I believe the early church did not practice Sunday School on Sunday morning, but did it daily, in each other’s homes! (Acts: 5:42 “Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.”)

All of that to say, that we are compelled, by God and His Gospel, to go beyond being a place where religious services happen, to being a place where God Life Together happens. Going beyond in this way has necessitated some change, and I know change is not always very easy for many of us. Be encouraged that we are aiming for a Biblical and good place, and that the growing pains are worth it! Be encouraged that we are endeavoring not to conform to the current pattern of religion in America, but to be transformed by Jesus into the Body of Christ. Spend time in prayer over this, and pour over the New Testament, particularly the parts that concern the church - the Body of Christ. He is working among us, building us together into a dwelling place for His presence. Amen and Maranatha!

See you Sunday,

Chase

One other thing. I know very little Swahili (less than twenty words) so I don’t understand this song at all, but I am moved and stirred by it, and by the translation of the lyrics:

Agape News: New Start Time (10:00am) + Breakfast together this Sunday and Pressing On!

Hello all,

Don’t forget that we now start at 10 am each and every Sunday, with a time of fellowship and breakfast. This Sunday, our primary breakfast chefs are out of town, so we will be having a pancake breakfast, and we are asking you to bring some fruit to share. What sort of fruit? Perhaps a couple of bunches of bananas, some apples and oranges, or something crazy like cactus fruit. We’ll eat at ten, and kick off worship shortly after that. Come join us, even if you can’t bring fruit!

Also this Sunday, we are continuing in Philippians 3, primarily focusing on the ONE THING that Paul says he spends his life on focusing. Do we in the modern church have a similar focus on one thing?

A few announcements:

This Sunday night, we would normally have Genesis, but as two of our primary families are not going to be able to make it, we are moving Genesis to the fourth Sunday night (10-24). So, no Genesis homegroup this week, but it will meet next week.

There will be a prayerwalk at Pinson Valley High School on November 13th, a Saturday. Several of our youth group members will be participating, and they want the rest of us to come as well. Chris Ledbetter will be telling us more about it the Sunday before (November 7).

Coming up on November 21, we will be having a large baby dedication. By this, I don’t mean that we will be dedicating a fifty pound baby (I don’t think), but that a whole bunch of babies will be dedicated that day. We are also going to have a friend day that day, so this is a great day to invite your friends and family members. We will be celebrating Thanksgiving with a meal together right after our morning worship also. It should be a very special day, so go ahead and mark your calenders now!

That same week, on Tuesday November 23rd, we will have been invited to the community Thanksgiving service, which is held this year at Living Word Church, just up the street from Pinson Valley High School. I love community Thanksgiving services, and I hope that you all will be able to make it. That Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, we will not be having Adult Bible study. Sam and David will let us know soon about Kids ReVive and EPIC youth that night.
Finally, please read this note from Monte, and help out if you can: Hey guys,

Sharon was talking with Linda a couple of days ago, and Linda asked her if she knew of anyone looking to clean her house and do her laundry a couple of days a week. Sharon asked if I would spread the word among our church family. If anyone is interested, you can contact us by email. Her washer and dryer are very slow, so whoever might want to do it will probably want to do the laundry at their own home.

Love y’all,
Monte

See you Sunday!

Agape Newsletter: Time Change Coming!

Hello all,

I don’t know about you, but I am sure looking forward to the weather this Sunday! High of 82, low in the lowers 60. I don’t care if it rains, I am just looking forward to the cool-down!

Now that we’ve got the small talk out of the way, let’s get down to business. This Sunday, we continue in our Philippians series, coming to one of the most important passages in the entire Bible. In Philippians 2, we find such a clear description of the Gospel, such a wonderful picture of the love of Jesus for us, that it is almost stunning. In the midst of the message, we will be looking at unlikely romances, and we will discover what has to be the most absurd, most unlikely romance in history, as well as a few runners up.

This would be an ideal message to invite your friends or family members to, as it will include an unmistakable and clear presentation of the Gospel. Also, this Sunday morning, we will be enjoying a mini-breakfast together! I am planning on picking up several dozen fresh and warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts and juice, and we will eat together at around 10:30, so small groups will get out a little early.

I need to let you know about an upcoming, significant change. Beginning the second week in October, we are changing the start time of our primary Sunday morning service to 10:00am. Going forward, we will begin our time together every week with breakfast and fellowship, moving into worship shortly afterwards. The small groups that currently meet at the church on Sunday mornings (with the exception of the seniors class) will be morphing into home groups. I will write more details in this space next week, but rather than telling you more about the move via email, Sam will be making a big announcement this Sunday morning, so come join us, and hang around afterwards in case you have any questions. Why the change? Why breakfast? Why homegroups? We will try and explain it all this Sunday!

Ann Talley and Selah will be coming home from the hospital soon! We want to bless them with dinners at night, don’t we?! Please email me if you would like to be part of that blessing.

Here are some dates to be aware of:

Sunday September 26: Krispy Kreme Doughnuts at 10:30

Wednesday, September 29: Launch of a New Wednesday night series The Gospel in Life: How Grace Changes Everything

Sunday, October 3: Genesis at 6:00pm.

Sunday October 10: New Service Time at 10:00am, kicking off with breakfast!

Sunday night, October 10: Awakening:Worship and Refreshment. 6:00pm.
See you Sunday!

p.s. One more weather note: Watch out for Tropical Storm Matthew. It might be a doozy!

Agape Newsletter: Wednesday Night Food Pantry and Town Hall Meeting.

Hello all! I need to let you know that the Agape food pantry is tomorrow (Wednesday) night. We need your help! Although, thanks to Sam and Laurie and our Kids ReVive children’s ministry. we have a lot of bags ready to give out, we still need help making a few more bags and then handing them out. There will be many people that come to us for food tomorrow - the more folks we have that can come help, the better we are able to minister to those who have food needs. Last month, I opened the food pantry a little early so that people could come help with bagging, this month I will open a little early as well, so if you can get there early - come join me at 5:30! Food pantry officially begins at 6:00, and we always have a line waiting.

After food pantry, instead of having our usual Adult Bible Study, we are actually going to have a brief town hall style meeting. The meeting will begin at 7:30, as I’m hoping that most people who are doing food pantry will be able to attend. We are going to discuss two items: 1. Our upcoming (new) Wednesday night series - which I am very excited about and 2. How we can better “reach” the people that are coming to us for food via the food pantry. I would love to hear your input on both of those items, and I hope you will be able to join us!

Once again, a quick summary for those who don’t like to read: 1. Food pantry tomorrow night at 6 - come help! 2. No Adult Bible Study tomorrow night. Instead we will have a 3. Town hall style meeting at 7:30.

That is all - see you Wednesday!

Chase

Oh wait - one other thing: This Sunday might well prove to be a special Sunday at Agape. I will be emailing you more details soon, but I will write this for now: Be thinking about a family, or a friend, or a group of friends that you can invite to come join us Sunday. More on that shortly.
